Lembongan Island

Lembongan Island is a small island located just off Bali’s southern tip to the south east.

The cheapest way to get here is by the public boat which leaves from Sanur beach at 8.30am prompt every morning. A ticket will cost you either Rp40,000 or Rp50,000 – depending on the whim of the guy selling you the ticket. This guy can usually be found in the tiny ticket locket located at the end Jalan Hang Tua where it meets the sea.

So unless you’re a real sucker for early morning punishment, you can imagine then that it’s far better to spend the night before in Sanur so that you’re not in a frantic hurry to get to the ticket locket in the morning. The Watering Hole (Jalan Hang Tua No. 35-37) is a cheap option but is getting a bit dirty and doesn't have the best service. But it’s okay for one night.

The public boat to Lembongan ain’t called the public boat for nothing, of course. And you’d better hope that they don’t try and fit too many people in it. Cos like most Indonesian boats, it has no capacity constraints at all: it can carry as many people as want to go into it. Magic!

But the real fun starts after 10 minutes or so. Cos usually the sea between Bali and the island is very choppy. Don’t you wish you didn’t have such a big breakfast? And be especially wary if there are a bunch of Indonesian children sitting nearby – they are always the first to get seasick – and they don’t use plastic bags!

But after an hour or so you arrive (God willing) at Jungutbatu, the main strip where cheap hotels are located. Scalpers will rapidly descend on you like flies to cow dung, but just tell ‘em you’ve already booked a hotel and that should shut ‘em up.

There are plenty of cheap places to stay (around Rp100,000 a night), so just check ‘em out as you walk along the sandy beach. Many will tell you they only have one room left – even though it’s pretty obvious that their other rooms are empty – to try to get you to make a decision to stay there. Don’t fall for that obvious trap!

Actually, when I first arrived at Jungutbatu I didn’t like it that much. This is because the whole of the bay is used by seaweed farmers as the tides go very far out. So it doesn’t exactly feel like an isolated tropical island at all.

But if you’re prepared to walk to the nice beaches it’s well worth a visit. The wonderful sandy beach at Mushroom Bay (no seaweed) is a good 2kms (30 minutes) walk away (walk to the end of the Jungutbatu strip and follow the path around, go past two coves, and you’re there).
